A Job That Is Still Theirs — Winding the Yarn
Slow, rhythmic, and endlessly repeatable. For anyone who knitted, crocheted, or sat beside someone who did.
A Job That Is Still Theirs — Winding the Yarn
Slow, rhythmic, and endlessly repeatable. For anyone who knitted, crocheted, or sat beside someone who did.
The job
Two chairs, close together, one loose skein between you.

- Hold the loop of yarn open between your two hands and offer them the loose end.
- Let them wind at whatever pace their hands choose. Do not speed it up.
- Talk about anything, or nothing at all — the winding carries the visit on its own.
A tangled ball is a fine ball. This is time spent together with something soft in the hands.
Why this one works so well late in the day
Repetitive hand movement steadies breathing, and steadier breathing settles restlessness. This is a good one to reach for around four in the afternoon.
