Elder-law paralegals often carry the operational load of a family's transition — coordinating documents, filings, and the small human details attorneys don't always see. This short reference addresses the specific place assisted living move-in timing intersects with the legal work happening in parallel.

The four timelines that interact

1. POA execution. A durable financial POA and healthcare POA ideally exist before move-in. If not, an attorney meeting to sign — while the parent is still clear — is often the family's most urgent task.
2. Residency agreement signing. Assisted living homes ask the resident (or, if the resident lacks capacity, the agent under POA) to sign the residency agreement. Facilities sometimes ask to review the POA to confirm authority.
3. ALTCS application window. Arizona's ALTCS eligibility depends on medical and financial criteria; the timing of asset movement can affect the look-back and cost-share.
4. Guardianship petition, if applicable. If a parent has already lost capacity and no POA is in place, guardianship may need to run in parallel with move-in logistics.
